MASONRY MORTARS FOR THIN JOINTS OF SILICATE ELEMENTS

FOUR CLASSES OF COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL USE

USE
The mortar is available in four versions of different compressive strength :
ATLAS SILMUR M-5 ≥ 5 N/mm2
ATLAS SILMUR M-7.5 ≥ 7.5 N/mm2
ATLAS SILMUR M-10 ≥ 10 N/mm2
ATLAS SILMUR M-15 ≥ 15 N/mm2
ATLAS SILMUR M-10 and M-15 are only available to order.
Recommended for constructing walls of silicate elements (all versions), concrete
and aerated concrete (SILMUR M-10, M-7.5 and M-5).
Used as a thin joint masonry mortar – recommended joint thickness between 2 and
10 mm (optimum thickness: 2-3 mm).
Used for surface trowelling and smoothing - with recommended coat thickness:
2-5 mm.
Types of masonry elements – silicate, AAC and aerated concrete, as well as bricks,
hollow bricks and other similar ceramic and concrete materials.
PROPERTIES
Available in two colour versions – each SILMUR material is available in white and
grey colour.
Easy and convenient to use – characterised by very good workability, plasticity and
high adhesion.
High coverage – the joint thickness can be monitored by using a notched trowel or a
dispenser, which results in reduced mortar consumption and speeds up construction.
It is possible to work at low temperatures, i.e. below +5°C, by adding antifreeze
agents to the mortar, which allows a wider range of application temperatures, flexibility
in mortar preparation (especially adjustment of the amount of water added); antifreeze
guidelines of manufacturer should be followed as to the method of application and
conditions of mortar setting; the amount of antifreeze addition depends on the cement
content in mortar (the cement : filler ratio is 1:2 in ATLAS SILMUR M-10 and M-15, and
1:4 in SILMUR M-5 and M-7.5. Caution. The manufacturer of mortars is not responsible
for the results of use and the quality of the antifreeze agents used.
SUBSTRATE PREPARATION
Preparation of silicate elements
Wall construction. Clean the surfaces of elements to be joined of dust and any loose
fragments. In order to achieve a thin joint of uniform thickness, it is recommended to
sand and dust the surface of previously laid elements.
Trowelling. The surface to be smoothed or trowelled should be dry, stable, flat and
capable of load bearing, i.e. sufficiently sound, and cleaned of materials that might affect
mortar adhesion, especially dust, dirt, lime, oil, grease, wax, residues of oil or emulsion
paint. Substrates characterised by excessive absorption capacity should be primed with
ATLAS UNI-GRUNT.
Weather conditions
Before commencing work it is necessary to give consideration to the conditions
during construction work as well as the conditions during mortar setting and drying.
MORTAR PREPARATION
Add the material from the bag to a clean container with a pre-measured amount of water
(proportions as specified in Technical Data) and mix using an electric drill with a mixer
(or in a concrete mixer) until uniform consistency is obtained. Leave the mixed mortar
to stand for 5 minutes and mix again. The mortar should be used up within ca. 4 hours.
APPLICATION
Wall construction
The first layer of blocks is laid and levelled using ATLAS MASONRY MORTAR. Apply ATLAS
SILMUR to the flat horizontal surface of the previously laid layer, to uniform thickness,
using a notched trowel. Also apply the mortar to the horizontal contact surfaces of
blocks, unless otherwise specified. Press each subsequent element firmly and tap into
place using a rubber mallet.
The information comprises basic instructions of product application and does not relieve
users of responsibility for work in accordance with good construction practice and OHS regulations.
Notes:Do not apply the mortar to excessively large surfaces in one go, because
it retains its adhesive properties for ca. 10÷30 minutes (depending
on the substrate properties and ambient conditions). To check if the
blocks can still be joined, test the mortar by pressing your fingers to
the layer. If the mortar sticks to the fingers, it is still possible to lay the
next element. If the mortar does not stick, it is necessary to remove
the old mortar and apply a new layer.
• Adjust the amount of water added empirically, considering the desired
mortar consistency, type of substrate and weather conditions. Using
an incorrect amount of water for mixing results in reduced strength
of the mortar.
CONSUMPTION
Wall construction
Examples of material consumption rates for 20 cm high blocks, with a
horizontal joint only:
Thickness of homogenous wall2 mm thick mortar layer25 kg bag
12 cm ca. 2.0 kg/m² ca. 12.5 m²
18 cm ca. 3.0 kg/m² ca. 8.3 m²
24 cm ca. 4.0 kg/m² ca. 6.25 m²
30 cm ca. 5.0 kg/m² ca. 5.0 m²
36 cm ca. 6.0 kg/m² ca. 4.16 m²
Trowelling
The average consumption is ca. 1.6 kg for 1m2 for 1 mm joint thickness.
TOOLS
Drill with mixer, notched trowel (notch size 4÷8 mm), trowel, spatula. Wash the tools with clean water directly after use. Clean the remainder of the set mortar, that is difficult to remove, with ATLAS SZOP.
PACKAGING
Paper bags: 25 kg
Pallet: 1050 kg in 25 kg bags

Store and transport in tightly closed bags, in dry conditions (pallets are particularly recommended). Keep dry. Shelf life in conditions complying with the requirements is 12 months from the date on the packaging. Soluble chromium(VI)
content in the ready mix ≤ 0.0002 %.
